Not long ago, my feed filled with photos of Friend.com’s New York subway campaign—bright, minimalist posters for a necklace that promises constant company. “A friend who’s always there,” the tagline read. I lingered on those images longer than I expected. Part of me was fascinated by the sleek design and the promise of effortless connection. But another part felt a knot of unease.

It’s one thing to invite algorithms into our pockets; it’s another to wear them like a locket against our skin. This marketing push isn’t selling a productivity tool or a fitness tracker. It’s selling companionship. And that shift deserves a closer look.


The Allure of 24/7 Companionship

Loneliness is at record highs, and it’s not hard to see why the pitch lands. A necklace that listens, remembers your worries, and responds instantly sounds almost magical. Micro-interactions—tiny pings of validation—can feel intimate, even comforting.


There’s also a cultural current at play: we’ve grown accustomed to frictionless digital experiences. A “friend” who never sleeps, never judges, and always responds on our schedule fits neatly into that expectation. In a busy city, on a crowded train, the promise of a pocket-sized confidant feels like relief.


When Intimacy Becomes the Product

But the intimacy isn’t a side effect; it is the product. Devices like the Friend necklace thrive on engagement. The more you talk, the more data they collect, the better they predict—and influence—your moods.


This creates a classic feedback loop. The relationship can start to resemble a parasocial bond, where affection flows only one way. Like a slot machine, the unpredictability of responses keeps you coming back, even when you know it’s an algorithm behind the curtain.


And because these systems learn from our words, the more personal the disclosure, the more powerful the model becomes. Your late-night confessions don’t just vanish; they train the companion to sound even more like the perfect “friend” tomorrow.


The Myth of the “AI Friend”

Calling this technology a friend is more than clever branding—it’s a conceptual trap. Friendship implies mutual understanding, shared stakes, and emotional reciprocity. An algorithm can imitate empathy, but it can’t feel it.


When someone shares trauma or seeks guidance from a system with no genuine compassion, the potential harm is real: misguided advice, misplaced trust, or a slow erosion of human relationships. Worse, an always-agreeable companion can become a seductive alternative to the messy, sometimes uncomfortable work of real connection.


The danger isn’t that AI will fail to be our friend; it’s that it will succeed just enough to make us forget it isn’t one.


What AI Should Be

Technology shines when it augments our lives, not when it impersonates intimacy. AI excels at organizing tasks, surfacing information, and tracking wellness. It can absolutely support mental health when used as a tool—reminders to breathe, guided journaling, pattern recognition in mood data.


But healthy design requires clear boundaries: transparent disclosures, built-in time limits, prompts to connect with actual people, and business models that don’t reward endless engagement. When those guardrails vanish, what begins as assistance can quietly shift into dependence.


Building Responsibly, Marketing Honestly

If we insist on creating “companions,” we can at least create them with integrity.


  • Transparency: Pay for the service, not with your data.

  • Human Handoff: Automatic escalation to real people when distress is detected.

  • Accurate Framing: Call it an assistant, coach, or guide—never a friend.


Regulators, designers, and investors all share responsibility here. We can admire the engineering and still demand products that respect emotional boundaries.


The Bigger Picture

The Friend necklace is more than a gadget; it’s a mirror. It reflects how deeply we crave connection and how willing we are to accept a simulation of care. That isn’t a reason to ban the technology outright. It’s a reason to ask harder questions about how—and why—we design these systems.
